Camping in Big Sur: Our Favorite Escape into Nature

My husband and I like camping, and Big Sur is hands down one of our favorite spots. Not only does it have some of the most breathtaking views on the California coast, but it’s also just a 1.5-hour drive from our home—close enough for a quick getaway, yet far enough to feel like a true escape. Plus, with barely any cell service, it’s the perfect excuse to unplug from work and fully immerse ourselves in nature.

We’ve camped at Plaskett Creek and Kirk Creek, two campgrounds on the southern side of Big Sur. Even when landslides have taken out parts of Highway 1 sometimes, we’ve still been able to access them, though the detours make the journey much longer if coming from the Bay Area.

Plaskett Creek vs. Kirk Creek – Which One to Choose?

Both campgrounds offer stunning views, but they each have their own vibe:

  • Plaskett Creek Campground: Located on the mountain side of Highway 1, you’ll need to cross the road to see the Pacific. It has flushed toilets and potable water, making it a more comfortable choice for those who prefer a bit of convenience while still enjoying the great outdoors.

  • Kirk Creek Campground: Right on the ocean side of the highway, some campsites offer direct Pacific views—falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves is a given. But light sleepers, beware… the waves can be loud! Also, keep in mind that Kirk Creek has only vault toilets and no potable water, so you’ll need to bring your own water supply.

Hiking & Exploring Nearby

One of the best parts of camping here is the amazing trails just steps away. To name a few:

  • From Kirk Creek, you can take the Vicente Flat Trail across Highway 1 or hike down alongside a creak to the ocean.

  • From Plaskett Creek, you’re right next to Sand Dollar Beach—just a short walk across the road to its parking lot, followed by a stairway down to the shore.

Speaking of Sand Dollar Beach, it used to be covered in smooth pebbles that made the most soothing sounds when the waves crashed in. But when we visited in 2023, the pebbles were gone, replaced by just sand! While still beautiful, it lost a bit of its unique charm, in my opinion.

Camping Tips: Be Prepared!

  • Book your campsite early – These campgrounds are typically full on weekends, but you might get lucky with a last-minute cancellation. Recreation.gov is where you can book a campsite, just search Kirk Creek or Plaskett Creek.

  • Pack for the cold – Even in summer, Big Sur is chilly, especially at night. On our first trip in April, I couldn’t sleep at all—despite wearing five layers and two pairs of pants! So bring a warm sleeping bag (you can get them from REI when it's on sale.). If you get cold easily like me, bring warm clothes—even in summer! Expect daytime temps around 60°F and nighttime temps dipping into the 40s.

  • Bring firewood – If you want a cozy campfire, bring enough wood before arriving—it’s more expensive to buy from the campsite hosts.

  • Stock up on food & drinks – The nearest mini-market and restaurant are about 15 minutes away from Plaskett Creek, so come prepared!

Final Thoughts

Big Sur is truly a magical place to camp. Whether you’re looking for oceanfront views, scenic hikes, or just an escape from everyday life, it’s an amazing spot to reset and recharge. I hope this guide helps you plan your next adventure here. Let me know if you have any favorite campgrounds or tips—I’d love to hear them!
